Hilary Coleman
Hilary's roots are in East Cornwall having grown up in Calstock with a strong sense of place. Her interest in music and Cornish traditions began then. She is a practising musician, teacher and researcher in Cornish music which has led to her having a large repertoire of Cornish music and songs. She plays the clarinet, bass clarinet and sings.
She co-founded several bands including Dalla and Skillywidden who are amongst the leading lights of the nos lowen style of Cornish Celtic music, touring extensively and recording several albums.
Through her work with Frances Bennett she has also organised many music events and festivals including the annual Degol Stul (twelfth night celebration) and more recently their organisation, Big Nos, began the incredibly popular monthly Klub Nos Lowen at the Cornish Bank in Falmouth.
Through her research she has produced several books of Cornish songs and music; including Shout Kernow, Cornish Pub songs in 2016 and Hark, the Glad Sound of Cornish Carols both of which won the Holyer An Gof Award.
For many years she has run Cornish music workshops for schools and community groups and is currently the music director of the community choirs the Red River Singers and the Redruth Carol Choir.
Hilary was made a bard of the Cornish Gorseth in 2004 for her services to Cornish music. She took the name ‘Atamiores’ which means pioneer, as she says she has often felt like the American pioneers of the west travelling into unknown territory with only 3 wheels on her wagon!
